Memories

Sometimes you do something that brings you back to your childhood. Tonight I got back early from looking for an apartment and decided to go for a bike ride. I figured that I had about 45 minutes before it got dark, so I hopped on the bike and hauled ass down to the east river bike path. About ten minutes into my ride, it started pouring. I mean torrential downpours. It was awesome. Zipping through puddles and getting totally soaked. (All the while trying not to think about what types of filth was mixed in the puddles that I was splashing through.) The sound of the bike tires zipping through the puddles, splashing the joggers, the rainwater pouring down my face, the smell of the air, everything just came together. It was all cool. I was in the moment.

Riding in the rain reminded me of being a kid and playing out in the rain. I always had a blast playing in the rain in the summer. Sometimes the rain would just make everything better somehow. Riding around suburbia, playing football. Whatever.

Anyway, although I was soaked to the bone, I couldn't have been happier about it. For about half an hour today, I was twelve again and didn't have a care in the world other than looking for the next big puddle.

So next time it looks like rain, I suggest getting on your bike and going back in time.

Three cheers for biking in the rain!

I never learned how to ride a bike. But stomping in puddles rocks.
